Physical and Spiritual Benefits of Fasting

Fasting is a lost art in our culture. It allows us to shed the weight of the world and focus on things eternal. It also provides a way to cleanse the body and begin the process of physical healing.

The Bible tells us that Jesus fasted for 40 days and nights before beginning his ministry. Traditionally, fasting is a sign of repentance and a desire to discern the will of God. Jesus encouraged his followers to fast, saying, “When you fast…” (Matthew 6: 16-17) Clearly, Jesus understood the benefits of the discipline of fasting. When we get away from “comfort foods,” we learn to become more dependent upon Jesus, the true Bread of Life, instead of on ourselves and the things of the world.

But, there are many physical benefits of fasting. If you are beginning the transition to healthier eating, a juice fast is a great way to start. In this way, food addictions can be overcome quickly, making the shift to a plant-based diet easier. By expediting the detoxification of your body with a fast, you also will begin to see the improvement in your health more quickly.

Fasting creates an acceleration of the healing process in your body. Energy normally used in the digestive process can be diverted to the immune system. Growth hormone levels rise and protein synthesis becomes more efficient during a fast.

Fasting also has been shown to reduce blood pressure and blood sugar, reduce pain and inflammation, and improve mood, energy and vitality.
