Healthy Breakfasts for Busy Families

A healthy breakfast is important. Every parent wants to make sure that their family starts the day with a nutritious meal. Kids and adults alike need the energy boost that food provides early in the day. But, many of the foods that are part of the typical American breakfast are clearly not healthy. Packaged cereals are full of sugar and chemical preservatives. Cow’s milk is suspect because of the vast array of hormones now used to increase dairy production. Eggs are high in cholesterol. Traditional pancakes and sweet breads are high calorie, with little nutritive value. So, what comprises a healthy breakfast?

When Fully Alive Today does nutrition counseling, we recommend a breakfast like this:
  • A smoothie made with frozen berries, bananas or mango, a small amount of pomegranate juice and/or water, and 1 or 2 leaves of a dark green vegetable like kale or collard greens. Download a sample smoothie recipe here.
  • Steel-cut oatmeal with berries and/or seeds or nuts
  • A salad of lettuce, berries, seeds, nuts and a homemade dressing
  • Organic herbal teas
  • Fresh vegetable juices
